The Department of Modern Languages has funding to support an individual in pursuing a 2-year master’s degree in Modern Languages with a specialization in: Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Linguistics, Spanish, French or German while serving as a Teaching Assistant in Portuguese each semester for two years. Starting date: Fall 2015.
The candidate will be required to teach elementary courses in Portuguese (Port 101, 102, 201, 202) and to organize extracurricular activities for the students (e.g. Portuguese Club, Portuguese Table). A B.A. or a master’s degree in Portuguese or a related field with previous teaching experience in Portuguese are required. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching and initiative in contributing to the Portuguese program.
We offer a stipend of $5,250 per semester ($10,500 per year). This assistantship will waive both resident and non-resident tuition (currently about $7,000 and $19,000 annually, respectively) and will be offered for four semesters with successful academic progression toward the master’s degree.
This is a great opportunity to earn a master’s degree (or an additional master’s degree) at UM and to obtain teaching experience in Portuguese at an American university, while being completely funded.
