Modern Languages Statement on Anti-Racism During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The educators, staff, and students in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi strive to promote communication, cross-cultural understanding, and connection with peoples around the world.

The planet-wide pandemic of the coronavirus recognizes no borders. Any attempt to construe COVID-19 as a “Chinese Virus” demonstrates abhorrent racism that has no place in our increasingly interconnected and multicultural world.

We condemn the recent incidents of racism, xenophobia, verbal harassment, and violent assault targeting Asians and people of Asian descent during this crisis. These confrontations are as reprehensible as they are hateful.

These incidents—both overt and concealed—reveal a profound ignorance of the inherent equality of all human beings and the values of kindness, generosity, compassion, and respect.

We condemn such harassment, and we denounce the normalization of the discrimination against Asians, people of Asian descent, and against peoples of any origin.
