Director’s Message:
Greetings from the SoCIOLing Lab! The Lab was founded in 2013 to provide a mechanism for training undergraduate and graduate students on community-engaged research, as well as a way to connect with scholars at peer institutions. At the same time, the Lab promotes the study of Linguistics and the diversity of languages and cultures globally. In this newsletter, you will find some of the recent publications, collaboratives and initiatives that highlight work from a vast and talented group of interdisciplinary scholars.
Over the years, I have trained students from the University of Mississippi’s Department of Modern Languages, Honors College and Croft Institute. Lab assistants become CITI-certified researchers, receive training on how to conduct experiments and code linguistic data. I meet regularly with Lab assistants to discuss various aspects of our ongoing projects, some of which are related to students’ stated interests in their theses or own research. This work has led to co-authored conference presentations and research papers for publication. In this newsletter, you will find profiles of recent Lab assistants, as well as a special message from a former Lab assistant who was recently named Employee of the Year in our local school district!
