Intensive Summer Programs in German, Japanese, and Russian
Achieve higher levels of proficiency in a shorter amount of time! Intensive Summer Programs are offered through the Department of Modern Languages at The University of Mississippi. Students in the program build their fluency in one of several languages through on-campus study and intensive language study in an international location. The program begins the summer before a student’s freshman year at the University of Mississippi. Students who are currently enrolled at The University of Mississippi are also encouraged to apply.
Intensive Summer Programs Brochure
Course Information
No prior language experience is required. In fact, students with no prior language experience are preferred as the students will embark on the language learning experience together. The program is structured so that you can complete your minor in the language of your choice in 2 years. Enjoy smaller classes, a collaborative language-learning environment, and the opportunity to study the language in the country where it is spoken.
Scholarships
For the first summer on-campus, entering freshman who apply to JumpStart are eligible for a 2.5 hour tuition scholarship. Limited scholarships are available for the study-abroad component of the program, depending on the language.
Basic Program Format
Summer I (prior to Freshman Year). This on-campus intensive language immersion offers six hours in the language of your choice. Housing is available on campus in residence halls and classes will be taught by a University of Mississippi instructor.
Fall Semester I (of Freshman Year). Students complete the first intermediate-level course.
Spring Semester I (of Freshman Year). Students complete the second intermediate-level course.
Summer II (following Freshman Year). Students participate in the approved 4-week study abroad program, earning six hours of credit.
Fall and Spring Semester II (of Sophomore Year). Participants complete their remaining upper-level credits to earn a minor in the intended language. If available, interested students may continue on in their language study to earn a major.
Application
The application deadline is April 21st. The priority deadline for students seeking a scholarship in the German program is January 15.
To apply, you must first submit an application for admission to The University of Mississippi, and then complete the Special Programs & Scholarship Application on line. Both of these applications can be found at https://www.olemiss.edu/applynow/.
Testimonials
“Being a part of the Japanese Initiative was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Learning the Japanese language in one month was challenging, but very rewarding. By the end of the first month I was amazed at how much I could communicate with the Japanese students on campus. Also the trip to Japan was amazing. In Japan I was able to live with a host family and travel all over Osaka. The staff at my Japanese school was always willing to help me with anything I needed and planned many great activities for students to do. It was a great experience that I will never forget.”
—Laneese Cosby, studied at Osaka Gakuin University, Summer 2012
“As a student in the German Language Initiative, I have been given opportunities that most people can only dream of. Although it is challenging to learn a foreign language in such a short amount of time, any difficulties I encountered were far outweighed by the tremendous rewards that this program has to offer. My time as a part of the German Language Initiative has given me a better insight into how the world works and how people who are different from me in language and upbringing are still very like me in values and traditions. The German Language Initiative has offered me both a much more complete view of the world and a broader vision for myself as a person.”
—Will Peterson, studied at the Goethe Institute, Munich, Summer 2012

Peter Ogunniran (German, 2017): “After my M.A., I got accepted into the PhD Program in German and Comparative Literature at Washington University in St. Louis. Thanks to the courses I took during my M.A. I was able to “hit the ground running” in the PhD Program as all my classes in Linguistics, Medieval/Contemporary Literature, Didactics and Pedagogy as well as practical teaching experience from Ole Miss counted towards the PhD course work / duties. With a few more semester of coursework, I will proceed to writing my qualifying exams and gradually begin work on my dissertation.”
Alexander Lorenz (German, 2017): reports that having taken classes in German Studies, Linguistics, and TESOL prepared him well for graduate school after graduating the program in 2014. The experience he gained from teaching language classes was very helpful when applying for Ph.D. programs and academic jobs. After graduation, he moved to Austin, Texas to pursue his graduate studies in Germanic Studies with an emphasis on Applied Linguistics and Educational Psychology. Throughout his graduate studies in Mississippi and Texas, Alexander presented at multiple national and international conferences on topics related to Second Language Acquisition, Instructional Technology, Individual Differences in Language Learners, and Linguistic Variation in German Speech Islands. He wrote a dissertation, entitled “Beliefs about Grammar Instruction among Post-secondary Second-Language Learners and Teachers” and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with his Ph.D. in 2018. Alexander accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship position and will continue teaching and scholarship at the University of South Carolina – Upstate.
Marvis Kilgore (Spanish) is now working teaching English in Doha, Qatar. After finishing the Teach for America Program in 2007 in Houston, Marvis came to Ole Miss to study for an MA in Spanish.
Catherine Couper (Spanish, 2012) is in the Hubert Department of Global Health, focusing on Sexual, Reproductive Health and Population Studies. Completing her M.A. in Spanish at Ole Miss enables her continued work within the Hispanic population in Georgia.
Stephanie Hirscher Beam (German, 2011) was excited to be offered a teaching position at a local high school immediately after graduation. She is now teaching four levels of German to grades 9 through 12. She says she has amazing students, who keeps Stephanie on her toes and entertained all day long!
Missy Green (Spanish, 2011) “Since graduation I’ve begun work as the International Liaison for a national restaurant industry publication, PMQ. With the languages classes I took during my Masters I acquired the skills to communicate with professionals in Spain, Brazil and Italy. I now live in Paris, a short flight away from various European food shows, always appreciative of the time management and long-term project skills I learned during my Masters.”
Ben Quilter (Spanish, 2010) “I work in a multinational team so being able to speak to my colleagues and our Spanish trainers in their native language is a great help. Additionally, the pedagogical experience I gained from teaching as a graduate assistant is useful for dealing with our language trainers and the issues they face.”

Trey McCain (French, 2012) has started an organization to promote the Celtic languages and cultures in the U.S.”
“No Heart without Language launched just a few weeks ago with the goal of bringing work from artists in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Brittany and Cornwall to communities here in the U.S. Our name echoes expressions in several of the Celtic languages. Welsh: ‘Cenedl heb iaith, cenel heb galon’ (‘A nation without language is a nation without heart’) Irish: ‘Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam’ (‘A nation without language is a nation without soul.’) Breton: ‘Heb Brezhoneg, Breizh ebet. (‘No Brittany without Breton’). We’re now in the process of incorporating as a non-profit here in the U.S. Our primary focus this year is the creation of a mobile gallery that will showcase the work of Celtic-speaking artists at festivals and gatherings throughout the U.S. We see this as an excellent way to show these languages in action by the very people who speak them on a daily basis and wrestle with the different facets of their identity. The individual perspectives of the artists illustrate what it means to live in these communities and their creations convey concepts that are sometimes lost in translation.

Hattie Burke Jackson College of Liberal Arts Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by the estate of Miss Harriet Jackson, a University of Mississippi graduate and Latin and French teacher at the University of Mississippi, to honor her mother, Mrs. Hattie Talbert Burke Jackson (1868-1917), a Water Valley native, “a splendid woman, active in every civic and benevolent work” (Water Valley Progress). Mrs. Jackson died at the age of 49, leaving Harriet and her three sisters to be raised by their father, Dr. Manuel Winter Jackson, “one of the most talented practicing physicians in the city (of Water Valley)” (Water Valley Progress).
The Hattie Burke Jackson Scholarship provides assistance to female students who are majoring in Classics, English, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, or Physics. The recipient must be a resident of Yalobusha, Calhoun, Lafayette, or Grenada Counties, and must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. in all courses. For additional information please contact the Departments of Classics, English, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, or Physics and Astronomy.
Miss Harriet Jackson received her BA from the University of Mississippi in 1924 and M.A. at the University of Mississippi in 1936. While in college she was a member of The Marionettes, a student drama club that William Faulkner helped found in 1920. Miss Jackson joined the Department of Modern Languages in 1950 where she taught Latin and French for 21 years, retiring in 1970. During her time at the University of Mississippi she served several semesters as chair, a member of the Mississippi Modern Languages Association, the Faculty Senate, an advisor to Phi Kappa Phi, and an advisor to the Latin Club.
Alfred William Milden Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 2004 to honor Alfred William Milden (1869-1944), a native of Ontario, Canada. He earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1899 and joined the University of Mississippi faculty in 1910 as professor of Greek. Dr. Milden served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 1920 until 1936. In 1937 he became head of the Department of Classics, a new department organized when the Latin and Greek departments were combined, serving in that capacity at his death.
The recipient will be a full-time upper-class student majoring in Ancient or Foreign Language, have need, and have demonstrated exceptional ability, professional competence, and leadership in the area of language study. For information please contact the Departments of Classics or the Department of Modern Languages.
Wofford Reynolds Price and Opal Read Price Fellowship in Modern Languages
Wofford Reynolds Price (1921-1998), a Winston County native, West Point Academy graduate, and WWII veteran, he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics from the University of Mississippi. Having received a Bronze Star for his army service, he retired after 20 years in the reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He taught physics at the University of Mississippi after the war for five years and subsequently enjoyed a long career with Hughes Aircraft in California before he and his wife returned to Jasper County.
Opal Read Price (1923-2017), a native of Jasper County, Mississippi, earned both her B.A. (1949) and M.A. in English and Literature (1950) from the University of Mississippi.
